FAQs

How does mold grow?

Mold only needs two things to grow: water and food, in the form of sugars and starches. Water must be present for an extended period of time, and any organic material such as insulation, drywall, wood, carpeting or wallpaper includes the sugars and starches that mold needs to grow. Typical places for mold to grow include bathrooms that are not well-ventilated, walls behind which water has continuously leaked, and anywhere that standing water is present.

What kinds of problems would I have if I've been exposed to toxic mold?

Toxic mold can cause a variety of health problems, from allergic reactions, to infections of the skin, eyes, and lungs to severe injuries of the central nervous system and brain. People with asthma or compromised immune systems are often more susceptible to mold-related health problems.

How is toxic mold "cleaned up"?

By the time you see mold growing in your home, it is probably too late to salvage much of your contaminated property. Items such as clothes, upholstered furniture and drapes that have mold growing on them generally cannot be cleaned and must be thrown away. Mold on and inside of walls must be removed professionally to ensure that mold spores are not released into areas of the house that have not been contaminated. And, of course, the source of the water damage must be eliminated, or the mold will grow again.
