FAQs

What is identity theft?

Having your identity stolen can be one of the most scary and frustrating (not to mention costly) problems you can face. It is also one of America's fastest growing crimes. When your identity (usually your Social Security number) is stolen, the thief is able to get credit, make purchases and basically act as "you". This can include buying expensive merchandise like appliances, cars and vacations in your name, which can wreak havoc on your credit history and cause problems for you for years. If you suspect your identity has been stolen, take action. Call D'Angelo & Hashem. We can help you get your identity back and resolve any disputes with credit agencies or credit card companies.

What is a lien?

A lien is the right of a creditor to secure a piece of your property or force you to sell it if you do not pay your debts. In the construction world, contractors often use mechanics liens to get property owners to pay their bills (i.e. pay the general contractor, subcontractors or building material suppliers). If one of these parties was having trouble getting payment for labor, services or supplies, he might place a mechanics lien on the property, which could force the owner to sell the property at auction in order to pay the bills. It is nearly impossible to sell property with a lien on it, so the property owner has a great incentive to pay up.

What is a tort?

A tort is an injury caused by someone else. Torts can be either intentional (someone stole your car) or caused by negligence (another car rear-ended your car because they weren't paying attention). They can cause physical injury or non-physical injury such as "intentional infliction of mental distress", libel or slander.
